We Learn Company!
The vision of Learn Company began in 2017 in a small living room with a big idea. We wanted to connect teachers who not only impart knowledge but also inspire and motivate. Our founder came to Germany at the age of six, without speaking a word of German. His family was never able to help him and his brother with their schoolwork. Instead, they had to assist their parents with everyday tasks such as doctor's appointments or shopping and translate for them. These personal experiences ignited his desire to create a place that would not only support children and young people in their education but also offer comprehensive support for families.
We started without an office, just a laptop and a lot of enthusiasm. We searched online for ads from parents and students looking for tutoring services, and compared them with ads from tutors. We analyzed the students' locations, the type of tutoring they needed, and their budgets, as well as the qualifications and expectations of the teachers. This allowed us to make successful matches and start our first tutoring sessions. From the very beginning, our goal was to help children and young people who wanted to improve their school performance through external support. We decided to hire our own teachers and emphasized humanity and ambition over rigid hierarchies. This philosophy was reflected in the relationships between our tutors and students.
Over time, the number of interested students grew. We opened our first office in downtown Cologne to offer tutoring outside of schools or homes. However, we knew more had to be done. We thought about our own childhood experiences and the gaps we had encountered, and asked ourselves: “How much more relaxed would it have been if we had had an institute to go to that not only offered tutoring but also supported our parents with parent-teacher meetings, school events, acquiring teaching materials, or connecting with sports and recreational facilities?” These thoughts inspired us to develop Learn Company further. We took our first steps in social work, helping parents apply for free tutoring and accompanying them to parent meetings. We sponsored sports clubs and connected children with recreational activities. In this way, we created a holistic concept that not only addresses the academic but also the social needs of students.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we participated in a school project funded by the Ministry of Education to close pandemic-related learning gaps. We also introduced cultural exchange into our concept and started an integration-promoting project. A teacher with a migration background taught newly arrived students with a similar background. This strategy worked exceptionally well — the students consistently improved, and the project was a success.
Our success spread, and after just one semester, we were cooperating with six primary and secondary schools. Since many schools had space issues, we opened facilities in various districts of Cologne to reach our target group more quickly and become a part of social space coordination. Today, we are the only learning provider permanently involved in district projects, working groups, and workshops. We now organize and conduct school projects or summer festivals, and financially support volunteer projects, organizations, and associations.
With over 30 partners and four locations in Cologne, we have received significant recognition for our work. In the 2023/2024 school year, we won our first special education and vocational schools as partners and are working beyond our branch locations. Our goal is to be represented throughout Cologne, both with our own facilities and with partner organizations. In the 2023/2024 school year, our team includes 240 tutors, 17 coordinators, and an apprentice, all of whom are involved in our development processes and progress. We are currently present in five cities and have found recognition in the capital after an invitation to the Bundestag in 2023, where we are currently collaborating with a secondary school.
Our vision is clear: We want to provide every student with a fair chance for education and social participation. Through our integrative and innovative approaches, we create not only better learning conditions but also a strong community. We see it as our mission to build the bridge between education and social support, and we are proud to walk this path together with you.
At Learn Company, the student is at the center. Our tutors are more than just knowledge providers - they are mentors who accompany students throughout their entire educational journey. We offer flexible tutoring solutions tailored to the individual needs of each student. Whether private tutoring at home, online tutoring, or tutoring in our modern facilities, we ensure that every student can reach their full potential.
We begin every collaboration with a detailed initial conversation to understand the student's current situation and challenges. Our qualified teachers analyze strengths and weaknesses, past learning methods, and potential social influences that may be affecting academic performance.
Based on these insights, we create an individualized support plan that focuses not only on acquiring knowledge but also on motivation and self-confidence.
Regular progress reports and feedback sessions ensure that we continuously adapt our methods to achieve the best possible results.
We rely on innovative approaches to make learning more effective and engaging, using digital learning platforms, interactive teaching tools, and gamification elements to individualize and improve the learning process. Our innovative methods foster creative thinking, problem-solving skills, and digital competence, which are essential in today's world.
Our learning spaces are designed to be flexible and equipped with the latest technology to meet the individual needs of students. Adaptive learning systems continuously adjust to the student's progress, allowing each student to learn at their own pace. We believe that technology is a powerful tool to make education more accessible and effective.
Currently, we are in the process of equipping all our teachers and students with tablets so that our learning offerings can become even more diverse, and many administrative tasks can be simplified.
As a responsible company, we are committed to sustainability and environmental protection. We have taken numerous measures to minimize our ecological footprint. This includes the digitization of teaching materials to reduce paper consumption and the use of recycled materials for our teaching and learning resources.
Environmental awareness is also an integral part of our teaching. We integrate environmental topics into our tutoring sessions and organize environmental actions together with our students and teachers, such as waste collection events in our communities. We aim to not only impart knowledge but also raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection and sustainability.
The word inclusion is very important to us. We are passionately committed to inclusion in education and the social environment. Our goal is to promote a society where everyone, regardless of their individual circumstances, has the same opportunities for education and participation. We actively work to break down barriers and create an inclusive learning environment.
A key part of our commitment to inclusion is our tutoring services for special needs schools. We understand that students with special needs require individualized support to reach their full potential. Therefore, we work closely with these schools to develop tailored support measures and goals that meet the specific needs of the students.
In addition, we carry out numerous inclusion projects aimed at raising awareness of the importance of inclusion and providing practical solutions to promote participation. These projects are diverse and range from workshops and interactive events to long-term programs that aim to create sustainable change.
Another focus of our work is on building an inclusive team. We are increasingly hiring special education teachers and students in this field. These professionals bring valuable expertise and help continuously improve our educational offerings to meet the individual needs of our students.
We believe that education is the key to an inclusive society. Through our commitment, we aim to contribute to ensuring that all people have the opportunity to participate actively in social life and fully develop their abilities.
